How to Disagree Politely in English
In business meetings, we often have to disagree with people. But disagreeing in a foreign language can be challenging because we often aren’t sure about the nuance and how we are being perceived by the people we are speaking with. But don’t be afraid! Today I’m going to show you some foolproof techniques for disagreeing with people in business situations in English.

否定的な単語や動詞を使わなくても、代案を提案することで意見の相違を伝えられる場合があります。「なるほど、あなたの考えも分かります。ではこういうアイディアはどうでしょうか？」と、相手の意見に対して理解を示してからであれば、異なる意見を述べても失礼に当たりません。また「actually」を使うことでもニュアンスが柔らかくなります。

Indirect Disagreement
Sometimes we can disagree without saying any negative words or verbs, simply by suggesting an alternative. It’s polite to show that you understand the other person’s opinion. You can make the sentence softer with “actually,” if you want to.

英語では通常、反対意見を述べる前に「sorry」などお詫びの言葉を入れます。よりソフトなニュアンスにするために「actually」で始めることも多く、時には「sorry」と「actually」の両方を使うこともあります。

Soft Disagreement
Usually, we apologize before stating our disagreement. Many times you can start with “actually” to make the sentence softer. Sometimes, we add both!

A Little Stronger Disagreement
Of course, there are stronger ways to disagree in English and native speakers use them sometimes. However, these phrases should be safe in any business situation, so you try to use them with confidence in your next meeting or conference call!

Bill: I propose we sell 2 different models at different price points. That way we can reach lower income demographics, too.
(私は２つのモデルをそれぞれ異なる価格で売り出すべきだと考えます。そうすれば低所得層までターゲットを拡大できます。)

Keiko: I hear what you’re saying, but don’t you think that will bring down our brand image?
(おっしゃることは分かるのですが、ブランドのイメージダウンにつながるとは考えられませんか？)

Bill: Not at all. I think it just makes our brand more accessible.
(それはないですね 。むしろ手が届くブランドだと購入層が増えると思います。)

Keiko: Sorry. I see things a little differently. We’ve worked hard to cultivate and maintain our image as high quality and high status. Selling a cheaper model could damage the desirability of our other high end products.
